Historic Downtown Kissimmee

Historic Downtown Kissimmee (not spelled Kisimmee or Kissimee or any other variation!) is situated in Osceola County, Florida, United States.  It’s worth a visit on a quiet day inbetween visiting the main Florida attractions and theme parks.  With a character of its own, a few hours can be spent relaxing and seeing what Kissimmee has to offer.  Lake Tohopekaliga also offers a few sights and variety to break up your vacation, why not try some bass fishing?

Historic Downtown Kissimmee History

The history of Kissimmee (previously named Allendale) mainly lies with a chap called Hamilton Disston.  Southern Florida was mostly underwater in the 1800’s and Hamilton agreed to dredge and drain the land in exchange for half of everything he reclaimed.  This injected money into the state and a trading route was established to the gulf of Mexico along the river Kissimmee.  History shows that the main trade was citrus although cattle ranches were also a fairly dominant industry when big freezes ruined citrus crops in the early 1900s.

Retirements in the US population were encouraged to settle in Kissimmee – boosting the population until Walt Disney World came along in the early 1970’s, at which point Kissimmee doubled in population due to the staff required at the theme park.

Have a look at the Kissimmee main street website for more touring information.

Celebration Disney – what’s all the fuss about?

Celebration Disney is one of the nicest places to visit in the Disney area of Orlando Florida. If there’s one place that you plan to visit, make it this one.

So, what’s all the fuss about? It’s just another town with neon signs, right?

celebration disney lake

Wrong. After travelling through mile after mile of badly designed neon signs, probably along the 192, you will no doubt be tired of the same old advertising and street layout in Florida. You’ll be eager to get to the theme parks, and probably avoiding any sort of sightseeing after a week or so. Make a detour to Celebration and you won’t regret it.  As you drift into the town you will soon see why it’s out of the ordinary, taking you back into an old style of the USA, with wonderful architecture and a welcoming feeling to every building in sight.

The first residents of Disney Celebration settled in 1996.  There are now over 4,000 buildings in the town and 9,000 residents.  The town enjoys a great downtown section, with boutique shops and an open area to walk in – no cars jostling past you with beeping horns.  Everyone just generally slows down and relaxes when they get to the town, and it’s a welcome break from the fast paced theme park attitude.

Be sure to take in the walking tour of Celebration, more information can be found here: Celebration Walking Tour.  The tour starts near the Preview Center (Charles Moore) on the corner of Celebration Avenue and Market Street near the beautiful fountain.   It’s a huge tower designed to show off the presence of the town.  As you progress through the tour you will see:

  • Celebration K-8 School
  • Stetson University building
  • Bohemian (Graham Gund)
  • The lakefront
  • The Celebration movie theater (Cesar Pelli)
  • The lake and the interactive fountain
  • Lakeside Promenade Fountain
  • Celebration Avenue
  • SunTrust Bank (Robert Venturi and Denise Scott-Brown)
  • Welcome Center (Philip Johnson)
  • Post Office (Michael Graves)
  • Market Street

Venture further out by car and enjoy the wonderful architecture and resident’s houses.  Walk down by the lake and along the boardwalk to other smaller lakes.  Take it all in and enjoy the slow and friendly pace!

    • Carpet One
    • Casa di Bella Bridal Boutique

Disney’s MyMagic+ MagicBands RFID wristbands will transform your next theme park experience

Disney claim it’s a whole new way to plan and share your Walt Disney World vacation.  They’re right.

Disney’s MyMagic+ MagicBands RFID wristbands will transform your next theme park experience.  These are just one part of the 3 part MyMagic+ system. More on that later – the best part of technology is the RFID wristband.

Walt Disney Theme Parks and also their resorts plan to advance theme park technology and are taking the Disney guest experience to the next level, but is this another case of big brother and big data being used in conjunction with your privacy being the biggest loser – one doesn’t seem to exist without the other and as the saying goes – nothing is free nowadays, especially not your whereabouts.

Disney are dangling the carrot of convenience and harnessing a huge amount of data for potential marketing avenues and commercial advantages. So:

  • No more paper tickets.
  • No more credit card.
  • No more fast pass.
  • No more hotel room key.
  • No more photopass.

This is all handled by the MagicBand and optionally the smartphone apps too, and it all makes up the My Disney Experience:

https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/plan/

Disney’s MagicBand RFID technology (radio frequency identification) is incorporated into stylish wristbands. On their own they are useless, but dotted throughout the parks are special sensors that will interact with sensors throughout the theme parks.

How much information do you want to give away? Once again this is a catch-22. More information equals a better experience, but also how much do you value your privacy? Favourite Disney characters, fair enough, and names. The Disney characters can then access the child’s MagicBand information and could greet the child by name, if the parents allow, of course.

MyMagic+ is needed in order to use fastpass, so it’s not exactly a complete opt out system without any negatives – you lose fastpass.

MyMagic+ comprises two other components: The My Disney Experience website with smartphone app, and FASTPASS+.

FASTPASS+ will also allow guests to reserve spots for the fireworks and parades before they even enter Disney theme parks, so it’s not just the traditional fastpass system.

So on to the smartphone app: Disney has released its guide app that covers all four theme parks and its other tourist areas that make up Disney World. The app features detailed maps, complete with markers of interest, and GPS tracking to help you find your way around (and them to find you).

Itune app: https://itunes.apple.com/app/my-disney-experience-walt/id547436543

Amazon app: http://www.amazon.com/Disney-My-Experience-WDW/dp/B0096CDHIK

Some of the features available are approximate times for Disney character appearances,  wait times (hooray!), FASTPASS return times, book dining reservations, nearby Disney Characters, attractions, entertainment, park hours, schedules.

Other facts:

  • For purchases of $50 or more Disney will require the user to enter a PIN as a safety precaution
  • Bands can be disabled and replaced to avoid misuse
  • MyMagic+ is rolling out in this spring and should be available to all guests by the end of 2013
  • 47 million visitors visited Disney in 2012
  • Data can be tracked minute by minute, raising interesting discussions on Big Data. This needs a new order of magnitude of processing and data power to harness and make use of
  • The Disney My Experience smartphone app is a free download
  • Walt Disney World is a site of over 30,000 acres in size
  • You can even make a reservation at one of the restaurants without getting off your phone app

Walt Disney World Speedway NASCAR driving experience

I learnt that there is a Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando today. As a car fan and petrolhead this is hard to ignore, especially since our private villa accommodation is so close to Disney itself. What a great addition to the list of things to do during your Orlando vacation or Florida escape to the sun.

So what does the Walt Disney World Speedway offer the Disney fan or Cars Petrolhead?

First of all, an adult can either drive or ride shotgun in a NASCAR race car around the mile long race track. 600hp to play with, and up to 140mph of fun. Slightly more than the Interstate-4 speed limit I believe. Even faster than the theme park rides at Universal Studios (think HULK) and Magic Kingdom. More exclusive too – how many people have driven a NASCAR?

For the younger person on holiday, they can join in the fun with a ride along in the NASCAR, so no one feels left out. These are available for children between the ages of 6 and 13 years old and at least 48 inches tall.

Walt Disney World Speedway is located in Orlando Florida and is a 1 mile “tri-oval” circuit. Built in 1995 for IndyCar but now the home to the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Link is below.

Money saving tips and hints when travelling to Orlando on vacation

Saving money in orlando

The best way to approach money saving tips for your Florida holiday is to look at the biggest costs first of all, and work down.

– Overall cost. Use a cashback site such as www.Quidco.com to earn cashback for purchasing a product you were going to get anyway. We usually save 10 percent on our car hire this way.

– Flights. Fly out of season if you can. Check out the airline’s timetable but look before and after by a few days and see what flights are lowest. Skyscanner is another good site to see what airlines are lowest cost. Some airports can be a lot cheaper than others too, so if you are flexible use Skyscanner to search throughout the country for your Flight. Consider flying in and out of Miami. It could be cheaper and most hire car companies will allow you to drop the car off at a different airport for a small charge. Lastly, use a flight price checker site to monitor costs – they can go up and down on an hourly basis. Be careful though, last minute cheap flights don’t exist any more.

– Accommodation. Villa vs Hotel?  A cheap apartment with a single king sized bed will cost on average 20-30 percent less than a villa.  Therefore for any group of 4 or more a villa will work out cheaper per person per night. This is before you oven consider the fact that a villa is private, more relaxing, and offers more freedom and no fighting for sun loungers!

– Eating out. This can be a huge cost during a holiday.  Get a villa and avoid having to eat out in the evenings and mornings. Pop down to Publix and buy a few groceries and your food bill will be reduced by 50 percent straight away. A villa offers all the cooking utensils you need and there’s no arguing about who’s the designated driver! Having groceries stored in the fridge means it’s more like being at home – food when you want it, and not at an inflated price. Don’t buy UK food, always get the local produce. Dine around the pool and enjoy the Florida sun.  During the day, you are allowed snacks in theme parks so make sure you get plenty of snacks and drinks before you go into the parks.  I usually buy a 24/48 pack of water and leave it in the back of the hire car.

– Car hire / rental booking & pickup. Always make sure you have compared buying separate car hire with a combination flight + car package.  We have done both methods in the past to get the best deal.  When collecting your car don’t tick any hire car options before reading what they are!  This is a classic mistake when picking up a car at the airport where they hope you’ll not pay any attention because you just want to be on your way to the villa.  The only option I ever bother with is the 2nd driver and fuel package, but this is when booking, not when picking it up.

– Car hire / rental.  Calculate if you really need the toll pass. We don’t usually bother with toll roads at all. It’s a personal choice. Fill up the tank with cash because credit cards add a hefty percentage on at some gas / petrol stations. Watch out for the extras. Sat Nav – I’d not bother, just ask for a map. Child seat – most airlines allow you a luggage item when you pay for your child, so pack the seat as a luggage item instead. We bought a Britax 2nd hand seat for £20 from the UK before we went on our last vacation, and packed this. Extra insurance – it’s expensive for what it is, so make an educated decision. Do you need the full tank option? Check the rate they will charge if you forget to fill up at the end.  If you don’t get the full tank option make sure you fill it up as close to Orlando Airport as you can (there are gas stations just a few miles away).

– Theme Parks. Unfortunately Disney don’t tend to do big discounts, but a multi day pass will work out well, and always watch out for parking costs which can mount up. Seaworld do a great second visit for $10 at the moment, and bulk Seaworld / Busch Gardens park tickets can offer great value for 14 day unlimited entry. There are a lot of discount ticket providers around, my advice is to check out the official online site and then compare and buy before you go to avoid the hassle when you arrive. Try to take your own drink / snacks into the parks. They don’t frown upon it but generally do ban coolers for obvious reasons!  Do not take sandwiches or anything that looks like a main meal.

– Insurance. Shop around on price comparison sites and cashback sites. You’ll be amazed at what your credit card might cover as well, although medical insurance is vital in the USA.  I normally pay less than £10 per person on our travel and medical insurance.  For specialist medical insurance try Medici.

– Coupons / vouchers. These are the final way to save money on eating out and groceries. Every store and shop has a coupon booklet. Pick one up and see what bargains you can get!

– Cheap things to do in Florida.  Of course the biggest attractions in Orlando Florida are the theme parks, but remember there are plenty of things to do and places to see that are cheap.  State parks offer a great value way of spending a day out – Lake Louisa state park is very near Orlando.

– Free things to do in Florida.  It’s easy to forget about the places you can visit that are free in Orlando.  Plenty of them also have Disney attractions so you don’t have to spend a fortune every day to visit Mickey and his friends!  Celebration Town, Old Town, Downtown Disney, Historic Kissimmee.  Further afield there are the Florida Keys and Everglades.

I hope this gives you an idea for money saving tips when you next visit our villa.  Saving money in Orlando isn’t as difficult as it seems, and can be just as enjoyable!
